Lenny Martinez: “I saw a shadow closing in, but I didn’t give up”

“I’ve been chasing a win since the start of the season. Beating Jonas [Vingegaard] makes it even sweeter. My family are here too; I saw them on the screen. I couldn’t be happier. It’s important to win. I’ve had some good results since the start of the season, but I wanted better. Winning is special, and right now I’m absolutely delighted.

When Jonas didn’t want to go ahead in the final kilometre, I thought to myself that it was a pity, but that’s the way it goes. I was a bit worried. When I saw the line, I thought: I’ve got to go for it, then I thought it was a bit far away… I saw a shadow closing in, I was really scared, but I didn’t give up and I’m very happy

It’s been a good week. I felt good every day; I didn’t have any off days. It’s different from last year; I’m much more consistent. And winning a stage at the end shows that I’m improving as the week goes on.”
