A chance for a breakaway?

March 13 th 2020 - 05:33

The longest stage in this Paris-Nice, a 227-km ride from Gannat to La Cote-Saint-André could also be one of the most unpredictable in terms of the outcome to expect. While the time trial in St. Amand Montrond scattered the favourites in a spread-out general classification, would-be escapees might hold their chance of the week. Quite a few riders with an attacking spirit have already lost precious time in the GC and might be tempted to try their luck to restore some pride. Riders like world champion Mads Pedersen, Thomas De Gendt, Niki Terspstra or Benoit Cosnefroy have the right profile for the job. In any case, it will take a solid group and a lot of determination to prevent the sprinters teams from setting up a bunch sprint but the course is far from entirely flat and it comes after four hard days. So far, only two fast finishers have really made an impression – Giacomo Nizzolo and Ivan Garcia Cortina, winners of stage 2 and 3. They will be the men to watch if the peloton reaches the final five kilometres all together.
